Mdantsane, Eastern Cape
The project is for the construction of a new 56 bed two-storey Private Hospital in Mdantsane, near East London. The existing clinic on the site, converted from a bottle store, had to be partially retained for diplomatic reasons and, together with the confined site, imposed several restrictions on the propose structure. The existing concrete roof of the bottle store required strengthening to accommodate the traffic loads of a hospital. Initially brought on as Project Managers with a design already having been undertaken, B4 Architects redesigned the entire facility to comply with Healthcare regulations. Interesting features of the design are the use of light-weight steel for the upper floor and roof structure and the use of MGO boarding and sheet cladding to create a context sensitive aesthetic.
